Audience: Midwives, student midwives, birth assistants, doulas and other community birth personnel with actual or potential occupational exposure.
Course description: This course provides bloodborne pathogens and occupational exposure control education specifically for professionals working in community birth environments.
Participants learn to recognize potential occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials; understand major bloodborne diseases and routes of transmission; implement universal precautions, engineering controls, work-practice controls and PPE; safely manage sharps, contaminated equipment, laundry and regulated waste; and appropriately respond to occupational exposure incidents.
Community birth scenarios include birth center and home-birth environments, maternal hemorrhage, placental handling, sharps use, newborn care and resuscitation, specimen collection, contaminated linens and equipment, environmental cleanup and accidental occupational exposure.
The course addresses the training elements of OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2). Employers remain responsible for determining applicability of OSHA requirements and providing required workplace specific information, policies, Exposure Control Plan access and procedures.
